Name: Cloud Strife
Canon: Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
Age: Twenty-One
Gender: Male
Canon Point: During the escape from ShinRa- right before Zack's death.
Background Link: Game Information | Character Outline
Inventory: Aside from wearing (1) SOLDIER uniform and the boots on his feet, Cloud carries nothing considered to be a possession.
Personality:
As a child, Cloud was a bit of a loner and rarely associated with the children his age. He considered himself above everyone else, and develop a rather increased superiority complex, often calling the other children around him "immature". He did, however, have a small fondness for the girl who lived next door- Tifa. Though not exactly close, Cloud considered her one of his childhood friends, and even followed her closely from time to time. It was because of this that the boy ended up in a lot of trouble- as Tifa had been injured climbing a mountain near their town and falling into a coma because of this. This caused the town's people to accuse the boy of causing the accident as the trip was his idea, and was later told by Tifa's father to no longer associate with her. Not only suffering from the blame of others, but Cloud also blamed himself for the incident, and buried himself deeper into a hole already well dug into. This in turn caused the boy to become easily angered, and even to the point of starting fights with the other children. There was little motive to his anger, and Cloud could be set of into flying fist for little to no reason. It wasn't until his inner resolve took over that Cloud began to remove those negative actions from his repertoire.
Cloud is very goal-oriented, almost to the point of having a one-track mind. He wants to be in SOLDIER, and even left his hometown with that very same ideal in hand. In his mind, SOLDIERs were heroes and if he were to become one as well, the people in his town would be able to accept him despite their false accusations and also acquire the attention of Tifa whom he sought to protect. By idolizing a man by the name of Sephiroth, who was (as you may have guessed it) a member of SOLDIER, Cloud sought to embody that which was the SOLDIER's title and strength. This in turn pushed his decision further into joining the ShinRa troops.
Time and time again throughout the game it is shown that Cloud mentions of his want to become apart of the elite. He even goes as far as to ask another member of SOLDIER by the name of Zack, as quickly as upon their very first meeting, what it was like to be apart of SOLDIER. There were also times when he mentioned wishing to be apart of the group, or "if only I was in SOLDIER". Though his efforts have been unsuccessful thus far, the boy still remains steadfast in his devotion to himself and his dreams.
It is through joining the troops that Cloud leaves most of his childhood personality behind. He never seems one to be quick to anger, and those aggressive emotions that once took place on the surface had been turned around and flopped into a complete 180. Cloud is far more gentle now, addressing his conversations in a quiet and almost meek-like manner. The boy is shy to boot, and still resembling a bit of his past, limits his social interactions to a minimum. He still very much keeps to himself, yet not in the manner once used before. The boy no longer considers himself "above others", in fact, that confidence soon takes a rather harsh dive bomb onto the edge of self-consciousness.
Because he was unable to make it into SOLDIER and instead becoming a lower rank infantry man, Cloud seems ashamed of this. Even upon returning to his hometown the boy hides his face with a helmet in order to avoid unwanted conversations from the people he once grew up with. He doesn't want other people to be aware of his faults- his mistakes. The boy tends to hide most of his emotions through silence, and it is rarely seen that he opens up to others unless forcefully prompted to or drive to extreme circumstances.
There are very few people Cloud actually opens up to, as he normally keeps his conversations to simple small talk and business during missions or free time. However, it is through his constant interactions with Zack that Cloud is able to open up to the other male more, and even begin to consider him a very good friend. Even still, while their friendship seemed to flower and the boy slowly crawled his way out of his shell, he still manages to have a hard time conveying his emotions into words. There are a few emails in the game sent to Zack from Cloud, even though they were on the same mission and not very far from one another at all. He claims in one of his emails that he is embarrassed to say the things enclosed in the letter out loud, and thus chooses instead to convey his words through other forms of communication. So while his heart seems to be in the right place, his lips don't seem to want to follow along. Don't get me wrong, though- while the boy is a quiet one, that doesn't make him any less of a sweetheart. He's soft spoken, sure, but the words that do come out of his mouth are never ones of hate or criticism. He is kind to others, and treats everyone as equally as he would treat himself. But while he does have those he idolizes and may hold a small amount of jealousy for, those feelings rarely come out past his physical demeanor.
While the boy seems stiff, as his normal disposition would see to it, there is also a softer side to the boy that leaves no less room for teasing. He is able to make jokes and, yes, is even capable of laughter. Cloud can even be seen cracking small jabs, and even makes fun of Zack's hometown name, calling it "backwater". The boy knows how to have a good time, as awkward as he may seem on the surface. And, yes, let us also not forgot that even he knows how to smile. It comes as a rarity, as his current occupation leaves little room for playtime, but the small moments of interaction between himself and Zack prove no less of a joy to him. It is through that man that Cloud regained his courage to fully strive for his goal of becoming a SOLDIER. With constant uplifts and encouragement, Cloud continued to felt the resolve to pursue his dreams.
He's respectful, and treats others and higher authority to the utmost. His currently life circles around the military way and their means of lifestyle. Addressing everyone of a higher rank as a 'yes sir' or 'yes ma'am'. Saluting and straightening not only his physical appearance, but the inwardly one as well. This comes with a whole new roll of responsibilities, as well as behavioral changes to shape a once naive country boy into a man of the military. However, through his difficult training and notably harsh instructors, Cloud still remains true to himself. While still actively obeying all orders, his quiet personality still remains in tact.
Don't let all that shyness fool you, though. This kid actually has a lot of spunk in 'em. Even the tiniest of mice are, at times, capable of acts of bravery, as Cloud has been seen to do time and time again. This can be clearly seen during the attack on his hometown, Nibelhiem, where the one man he truly looked up to- Sephiroth- had sent the whole place ablaze. Resulting in the death of his mother, and injuries to his friends. Despite holding all of the respect in the world for the man, Cloud takes up his friend's sword for their protection and safety, and even lashes out at the man. Causing him to be gravely wounded. The boy did not hesitate to fight for his friends, knowing full well he lasted little chance of matching the strength of a SOLDIER, and protect the things he truly cared about. Cloud would do anything for his friends, as well as though who happen to be in need. His heart is full and overflowing, though sometimes it just take a little effort for those emotions to be portrayed. In a time of crisis, though, you can beat that his boy will be right in the middle of it to protect what he deems important, even at the cost of his own life.
Cloud is a dreamer, a fighter, and someone who would attempt to reach their goals despite the circumstances surrounding him. Though awkward (and when I mean awkward- I mean awkward) he still retains his need to help others. This closed shell may not be as tight as it may seem, but through his constant patient and almost cautious attitude, the boy leaves a lasting mark on the world as bright as that feathery Chocobo hair of his.
Flavor Abilities:
Unlike the SOLDIERs who were injected with Mako cells to increase their strength, Cloud instead was poisoned by said enhancer. Which, sadly, means he doesn't possess any superhuman strength to begin with. (The lasting remnants of it physically resides with him though, as his blue eyes almost give an unusual glimmer.) That doesn't mean he isn't strong, though. When pushed to his limits and charged this adrenaline, this boy can pack quite a punch. He is a trained infantry man, and thus acquired multiple skills on fighting as well as outdoor survival. While he might not be as skilled as others, it is noted that Cloud does possess impressive sword skills, as mentioned in the game. He is fairly decent with technology considering it is his preferred source of communication, and is likely able to learn the functions of his device and others rather quickly.
Suitability:
Cloud is a country boy. He grew up in the mountains and was constantly surrounded by the outdoors. Thus, his adaptability to his surroundings comes almost as a second nature. He may not be considered a leader, but he is a hard worker and obtains the survival skills needed to last in harsh conditions. Also probably a basic knowledge of first aid which would likely come in handy.
Cloud's dreams and aspirations revolved around rescuing and the protection of others. To which he is likely to give the same amount of earnest ambition here, as well. And although his goal of one day becoming a SOLDIER had been thrown out the window due to its corruption and years of experimentation, it is unlikely that Cloud would abandon someone who was in need. It would be interesting to see how the changes here will effect his need for survival, as well as the survival of others.

No amount of military training could have possibly prepared Cloud for this moment.
It was another cold night- night? How many nights had it been? Thoughts clouded and a rigid heave of the boy's chest made it hard to focus on the simple question. He had thought hard about it, though. With eyes shut tightly if only to try and set his mind onto one particular subject, rather than the gripping numbness he felt trying to attach itself to his lanky limbs. Nights.
Cold nights.
Cold.
It was cold.
With only the comfort of two coats against his chest and the small amount of heat radiating from the body beside him. That body who, despite their seemingly helpless situation, lied messily to his side and had already allowed sleep to consume him.
"Zack..." The words were muttered into a mere whisper, barely audible even to himself. They were not uttered as to wake the other, but rather to claim a sense of peace for himself he could not yet obtain within this own mind. While Cloud stayed up worrying about the passing days and noticeable decrease in their meals (which, to the both of them, was a subject for concern) Zack had found it in himself to rest. An action the boy felt was miles away at the moment. It was because of this man in the first place that Cloud felt even the tiniest bit of warmth- more so physically at his very moment. One of the coats has belonged to him. And although Cloud had persisted time and time again that he had no use for it, his shaking exterior quickly gave him away. Even in a place like this, far away from Hojo's experiments and the constant torture, Zack was still looking out for him.
He suddenly felt a twinge in his stomach.
"I'm not going to let is end this way. I'm-" His voice drifts, caught off by the intense beating of his heart and a firm clench of his fists. A resolve? Perhaps. He wasn't going to allow this man to do all the work by himself, not anymore. Cloud was no longer the lifeless zombie he was, rather now an aware an able body set to want to help, too. And that was exactly what he was going to do."-I'm going to protect you, too. Just like you did for me."
And so finally, finally, the boy allowed his eyelids to close. Breath finally slowing down into a calm and repetitive motion. For now he would let his mind drift from the crippling cold. For now he would find a new place to keep his thoughts. For the protection of the man sleeping beside him, and whoever else caught in this horrid situation along side of them...
"Sleep well."
